You don't need to spend money to do good deeds. It's all about giving up your time, which is the most precious thing you possess. So here's a list of the 11 random things I've done recently.

kindness

1. Dropped my friend to his work place

He works from 3pm to 11pm but cannot sleep until it's like 5am, so he's always waking up late and has to get a taxi to get to work (costs him £5). I offered to drop him a couple of times and he really appreciates it.

2. Bought my house mate her favourite beverage

She's from Nigeria and loves drinking Malta Guiness which is like a beer but non-alcoholic. On my way to work, I noticed this drink on the front windows of a small African shop. One day whilst coming home from work, I stopped there and bought a pack for her. She was so surprised and happy when I have it to her.

3. Took pictures of the door lock for the landlady

A difficult tenant was moving out and the landlady was worried he would steal or break things in the house, so she asked me to take some pictures of the lock on the front door and send it to her. She would then order another one online to replace the current one. If I hadn't done that, she would have had to travel 1 hour to get to the house.

4. Brought back the exact juice a colleague wanted

Whilst going out to get a sandwich for my lunch, I asked a colleague whether she'd like me to get anything for me. It was an orange and mango drink she wanted and said she doesn't like anything else. However the shop I went to didn't have that particular drink but I managed to get it from another shop (8 minutes away). She was extremely happy I walked the extra mile in the cold to get it for her.

5. Recycled my cans instead of dropping them in the bin

After using chopped tomatoes, I was about to throw the can in the general waste bin but I stopped myself from doing it and instead put it in the recycle box along with the coke cans. This is a small gesture to protect our environment and prevent land pollution.

6. Stroked a random cat which needed some affection

When I was coming back from my lunch break, I saw a cat on the street. He was meowing loudly at me and came very close to me. So I started stroking him and he began purring to let me know he was enjoying the affection. After like 10 minutes, I had to make my way back to work and he decided to follow me but I walked fast and didn't look back to discourage him. It's a great feeling to be nice to animals.

7. Relocated a spider from my bedroom to the garden

I noticed this little spider hanging from the ceiling directly above my bed but instead of killing it (or vacuuming it), I got it on a stick and released it in the garden. I think whenever possible, we should be kind to nature.

8. Held the door opened for someone who doesn't like me

This guy at work doesn't talk to me, even when we're in the kitchen making tea. I suppose he doesn't really like me or maybe he's not very social. Either way, it makes me feel uncomfortable when he's around. Anyway, one time I was walking down the corridor and noticed him coming behind and I held the door opened for him. It was a split second decision of whether to ignore him or be nice and I'm happy I put away my ego as he appreciated the trouble and said thank you.

9. Complimented the shop assistant in Greggs

I went to Greggs to get a cheese and onion pasty and a prawn mayonnaise baguette. When the shop assistant was serving me, I noticed he had really nice tattoos on his arms and I told him they looked superb and that uplifted the young lad who then started smiling and telling me all about it (where and when he got it done etc).

10. Helped a stranger carry her bags to her car

As I was taking the stairs to get to the car park, I saw a woman struggling to walk down as she had too many bags with her. I offered to help her and carried most of her bags down 3 set of stairs and up to where she was parked in the basement. After loading her car, she thanked me and told me it was really nice of me to come a level down from where I was meant to go just to help her.

11. Led a woman in distress to her destination

Whilst going to give blood for the first time, part of the road on the M1 was closed and a woman stepped out of her car from behind me and knocked on my car's window to ask whether I could help her get to Luton Airport as she needed to pick up her husband. I wasn't going there but I decided to help her anyway by informing the donor centre I was going to be late and changing the route on my sat nav.

One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind indeed!

I think it's not just about helping other people but also about being kind to nature, animals, the environment and the world as a whole and all the little things we do really adds up and before we know it, we're changing the world for the better.

If you've done something nice recently (not for yourself), share it with us :)

Got into a car accident, left my vehicle despite being injured called the emergency numbers while trying to extract the man who hit us because we were afraid that his car will burn.
